Living together in space
November 2nd, marks 20 years of continuous habitation of the International Space Station. When #Expedition Crew 1, of #NASA #astronaut Bill Shepherd and his two #Russian crewmates - Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikale - first arrived they couldn't open the hatch, but after a 5 minute struggle eventually got inside. Gidzenko recalls “We got some hot water. We activated the toilet, and I remember Shep said, ‘Now we can live. We have light, we have hot water, and we have a toilet.'
Now 20 years after Expedition 1, Expedition 64's crew is living and working aboard the space station. Kate Rubins, a flight engineer on Crew 64 calls the space station a #worldclasss #laboratory with more than 200 experiments per expedition."
But the ISS is much more than a lab. It represents an unprecedented era of #peaceful cooperation in #space, paving the way for hundreds of residents and visitors from countries around the world to conduct #science, expand boundaries of knowledge and further #space #exploration such as the #Artemis program to land the first #woman on the #Moon and to prepare humankind to become an #interplanetary species by travelling on to #Mars. Worth celebrating!
